Meeting once a month, rain or shine, Field Trip gathers folks at the fieldhouse to get curious about the world of sounds we are immersed in. Have you ever wondered about a bird or animal call in your yard? How about the hum of electricity? Field Trip helps get you acquainted with using various audio equipment to record sounds in natural and urban environments. You’ll be able to make recordings for personal use and experiment with using different types of recording methods and microphones. What could electromagnetic fields sound like? Would it sound even cooler if you recorded it to tape?? Come find out!
Meetings are relaxed and open to all levels of skill and ages. Starting with a beginning preamble of some light refreshments, we decide as a group where we might wander or to center on a particular topic for the day. Each meeting gets you engaged with a way of listening, and there can be a diverse amount of options to choose from!

The idea for this program stems from our own passion with field recording. It’s hard to know where to begin when first learning to use audio technology, and oftentimes, it can be a solitary endeavor. So at Patchbay, we hope to make the process easier, by sharing a library of equipment, experience; and by trouble shooting and making things together, in ensemble.
As this program develops, we hope to create an ongoing “sound map” at Patchbay! Collecting recordings as we go, we hope to develop an archive of the soundscape radiating from Elm Park, throughout Vancouver. This is a practice of listening collectively, in community, and ultimately becoming a little more flexible in our listening habits. Slowing down, taking notice of the place we are listening from, and becoming more open to the human and non-human sounds that interrupt, soothe, or excite us. See you out there!
